Big Little Lies season 2 spoilers: This return could shock you

Reese Witherspoon

Is Alexander Skarsgard returning for Big Little Lies season 2? While conventional wisdom would lead you to believe that there’s no more story to tell — Perry died at the end of season — this show may still find a way to surprise you.

According to a new report coming in right now via TVLine, Skarsgard is poised to come back in some capacity after cleaning up at various awards shows for playing the part of Perry over the first season. There is certainly some ambiguity over how this could happen, but we do think there are a few ways in which a return could still somehow be feasible.

For example, could Perry come back via a dream sequence? He is not the sort of character Celeste is going to forget about anytime soon due to the horrible trauma that he inflicted on her. It’s also possible that there is a little bit more to his story that could be revealed via flashbacks or as a ghost that just keeps haunting Celeste.

We’ll go ahead and be honest here: We don’t need to see Skarsgard again. He was brilliant, but we’d rather the series just move forward rather than just playing fan service to everything that has happened on the story beforehand. There’s a good chance that we learn nothing from bringing him back on the show and, beyond that, there is also a reasonably good chance that it inhibits the ability for the story to move forward. That’s even more the case if the show really goes out of left fiend and brings him back from the dead … not that we think that this is something that is actually going to happen. Logically, this just wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense for writer David E. Kelley to do given that it would negate much of the emotional resonance that came from the end of the first season.

Obviously, Big Little Lies season 2 has earned a certain degree of trust based on what we’ve seen on the show to date, so we’ll try to just assume that they’ve got a plan that makes sense.
