Countdown to Absentia: Discussing the season 2 silence
We understand there being questions regarding Absentia season 2 right now, mostly given the talk of a renewal back when the show’s US home was officially announced. The first season of Absentia starting filming in early 2017, so it makes sense for there to be questions popping up regarding what is really going on here.
Luckily, we do also think that there are some reasonable answers about why filming for season 2 hasn’t started yet, and many of them begin with the fact that season 1 hasn’t come out yet in North America. In order to make those seasons a success, Absentia needs to be properly promoted. This means, in turn, having Katic and the cast doing as many interviews and promotional appearances as possible. Given that this is a series that films in Bulgaria, it’s hard to expect them to be able to juggle promotion and filming. The wait for season 2 filming allows the team behind the scenes to cultivate the best story, while it also enables the cast to fulfill their promotional obligations for season 1. We imagine that the second season, pending some unforeseen surprise, will start filming at some point after the show launches on Amazon — the only reason to delay it far after then is either for story reasons or a desire to not have to film in all of the snow again. Given that Boston does thaw out in the spring and Bulgaria is doubling for that location, it makes sense to wait until the spring to shoot more episodes.
As for whether or not this could impact that Absentia season 2 air date in some other territories, much of that depends on how long filming lasts and the broadcasters. We do think based on the filming timeline for season 1 that there would still be time for the series to get done early enough to air in some places this fall.
