Legends of Tomorrow season 3: Keiynan Lonsdale becoming series regular

Kid Flash -

Earlier this week, we reported for the first time that Keiynan Lonsdale was heading over from The Flash to Legends of Tomorrow season 3 for what appeared at first to just be an arc. As it turns out, this gig is a little bit more significant than anyone first knew.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Lonsdale will first appear as Wally West during the upcoming 13th episode of Legends of Tomorrow, and following that will officially become a series regular for the remainder of the third season. Getting Lonsdale on board the series for more episodes is absolutely a great thing, given that it offers up an opportunity for him to have a consistent role and a story that is much more his own. As much as we enjoy The Flash, it was pretty clear on that show that they didn’t know what to do with him. Having two speedsters full-time on the same show can get a little bit repetitive, and beyond that it seems like Ralph Dibny has, at least for now, taken the spot of Wally on that team.

In a statement, show executive producer Phil Klemmer had the following to say about Lonsdale coming over:

“When his character stepped away from Flash to go on walkabout, after being dumped and feeling somewhat estranged from his family and team, we knew that Wally West would fit in perfectly on Legends … By the end of this season, Wally will learn that the Legends have a different definition of what it means to be a hero.”

On Legends of Tomorrow Wally fills a little more of a unique purpose, given that there are no other speedsters on that team and as a result of that, he absolutely stands out so much more than he once did. This will be a showcase for his powers and a chance to learn how to be a part of a team alongside people like Sara Lance and Ray Palmer. A spot for him seemingly opened up following the departures of both Franz Drameh and Victor Garber a little earlier this season; those two characters put together comprised Firestorm, a fantastic comic-book character who had a nice run. In many ways though, Legends of Tomorrow is a show with an ever-changing ensemble and it was clearly meant to be like that.
