Grey’s Anatomy season 14: Is Camilla Luddington Emmy contender after episode 9?

Camilla Luddington

Even though Grey’s Anatomy may be in its 14th season, there are certainly still some performances happening across the board that are worthy of some recognition. As to whether or not that happens, we’ll have to wait and see.

Earlier this season, we proclaimed that Caterina Scorsone should get some recognition for some of the work that she did during Amelia’s whole brain-tumor arc. After all, just remember that she played basically two separate versions of this character this season. Tonight after “1-800-799-7233,” we would say the same exact thing about Camilla Luddington as Jo Wilson. She was powerful, compelling, terrifying, and vulnerable rolled all into one package. She delivered all of the emotions you would want to see for a story this painful in nature.

Sometimes, you have to remember that acting is not just about dialogue; it’s about silence, and working to figure out ways in which to fill the void. Luddington did that with her eyes in the opening minutes, her tears when she was outside the hospital, and her body language when she was trapped with Paul (Matthew Morrison) and Meredith (Ellen Pompeo). When she did use her words, she proved to be incredibly powerful — we could feel the word “monster” almost reverberate through the screen. Having her dialogue with Morrison be so minimal was such a smart choice for the writers — it made every single word matter, and it felt true to life with how an abuse victim would choose to address someone who did such unspeakable things. They would want their words to strike and be emotionally resonant.

Luddington played Jo’s struggle with a deft touch — you saw her suffer in one moment whereas in another, she did her best to help Jenny. While that did not help Jenny in the momentum, it could have been an impetus for further things to come judging from the end of the episode tonight.

In the end, we can only hope that the Emmys or someone else chooses to recognize Camilla here — if nothing else, can we keep her in the conversation? We know network shows don’t always get a ton of love but she is absolutely still worthy.
