True Detective season 3 casts Halt and Catch Fire alum Scoot McNairy
According to a new report from Deadline, McNairy is poised to appear in the third season of the HBO franchise as a father named Tom, someone who is spending the majority of his time on the show wrestling with grief. He is forced to deal with a “terrible loss,” and the result of this he’s basically finding himself in a position where is future is “tied” to that of two state police detectives. His story will take place over the course of ten years, which makes a certain degree of sense given the fact that True Detective season 3 spans a great deal of time as various characters struggle with both the immediate and long-term aftermath of an incident that transpired in the Ozarks.

McNairy joins a fantastic True Detective season 3 cast that is fronted by Mahershala Ali of Moonlight fame, and production will be taking place in the months ahead in Arkansas. This is a great chance for HBO to have another smart, twisted story; to go along with that, this also marks a chance for creator Nic Pizzolatto to redeem himself after season 2 crumbled and was strongly disliked by most critics. He wrote the entirety of the third season’s episodes beyond episode 4, which he wrote alongside David Milch. Pizzolatto will also be directed at one point during the third season, just in case you wanted a reminder that this is a man taking a rather large amount on.
Some of McNairy’s other recent TV credits include appearances in Godless as well as Fargo — basically, this guy is getting all of the great TV gigs.
