True Detective season 3 premiere date will not be until 2019
What’s the reasoning behind that? It’s really quite simple: There is no way in which the show could be ready before next year. It’s filming this year and it’s going to take some time in order to get some of these episodes together. We’ve come to learn over time that True Detective is really not the sort of show that you want to rush (season 2 wasn’t a fan favorite for most). Great things take time, and if this show wants to be great, Nic Pizzolatto and everyone working on it need to have some patience. If they do that, we’re pretty sure that on the other side of it we’ll have a show that everyone can be proud of and that fans will enjoy.
The pressure is certainly on True Detective season 3 for a number of different reasons, with one of the biggest ones being that the second season didn’t live up to a number of expectations people had for it. As a result of that, the pressure is almost certainly on to deliver a stronger, better end product this year — that means a tighter narrative, and a show that feels in some ways thematically different than the first time while still bringing us outstanding performances.

The one thing we do know is this: With Mahershala Ali in the lead role, it feels very much like True Detective season 3 is working to establish itself as a show with great actors and a mystery that will leave people guessing. We imagine that next year at TCA is going to be a better time to actually get some scoop on the story that is coming up. For now, the folks at the network are keeping things close to the vest.
