Vikings season 5: What’s next for Lagertha and Heahmund?

Is there a future of Lagertha and Heahmund on Vikings season 5? The more that this season progresses, the more it feels like these two will have some sort of connection — whether it be platonic, romantic, or something else entirely remains to be seen. A connection will be forming and we should get a better sense as to what that will be on Wednesday night. Lagertha has captured him in the first battle for Kattegat and so far Heahmund hasn’t been willing to open up to any viking, but Lagertha has experience in this area after watching the friendship develop between Ragnar and Athelstan.

For Lagertha, in particular it’s clear that she could use some more people in her corner — it’s not exactly like all that much has been going her way as of late, and to make matters worse she doesn’t exactly have Astrid around anymore, either. She needs someone to rely on outside of Bjorn, and we do think that Heahmund could understand her in a way that few others do. Both of them are, to a certain extent, outliers — they both recognize what it’s like to be treated as different and to be thinking on another level. They are both smart, strategic people who don’t take the road frequently-traveled.

Plus, it just makes sense that Michael Hirst would want to throw Katheryn Winnick and Jonathan Rhys Meyers into as many scenes as possible together. Both are outstanding actors that can play characters that are multi-layered. Seeing these two on screen together is something that we’ve been looking forward to all week.

In a recent post on Twitter (see below), Winnick teased that the two characters “connect in [a] different way” — she didn’t necessarily say that it would be romantic, but they are going to experience something together that is perhaps different than anything she’s went through with anyone else in the past. Their history and traumas set them up to have an understanding of one another.

As for what we’d like to see with these two, much of that just starts with friendship. While this show has many great battle scenes, for us this isn’t so much a show about violence, but more about the different relationships and unique friendships that develop. It’s a show about perspective, peace, war, and learning. Lagertha as a character has seen other perspectives before due to her time with Ragnar; she could be a person who could help Heahmund to open up. To date, he hasn’t been altogether welcoming to anyone he considers outside his religion. We’d like to see these two expand one another’s horizon; let everything following that to come about in an organic way.
