Hawaii Five-0 video: Chi McBride discusses emotional Grover episode

Hawaii Five-0 season 8 episode 13

Hawaii Five-0 season 8 is airing a new episode Friday night at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time, and before you dive into this episode, you’re going to want to make sure that you have some tissues nearby.

Entitled “O ka mea ua hala, ua hala ia” (“What Is Gone Is Gone”), the story of the episode revolves largely around Lou Grover detailing his own history with suicide in an effort to stop a man named Brad trying to take his own life. It’s a chapter of Grover’s life that is raw and painful, but through that you can see why he is so intent on helping Brad through this. The two men run the gamut of emotions and by the end of the episode, you may understand the character of Lou Grover so much better than you ever have before.

In the new video below, Chi McBride explains the premise of the episode, but at the same time some of what this story means to him as we see Lou try to relate his history to Brad’s. He discusses some of the events of Grover’s life that put him into such a dark place, and concludes the video by saying that this is a very different sort of Hawaii Five-0 episode.

In addition to McBride offering advice for people out there trying to help those who are suffering, the video concludes with the phone number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. There will be a PSA featuring McBride that will air alongside the episode.

We’ve already had an opportunity to view this episode, and without giving too much away we’ll say that it’s a gut-wrenching, very human look at a subject that impacts us all. Even though McBride has given many a great performance throughout his career, this is absolutely one of his best. It will bring you closer to Grover and, in some ways, the character may forever change in your mind after hearing more of his story. It is definitely still the same Hawaii Five-0 you know and love, but it fills out the universe in a significant and poignant way.
