Modern Family season 10 reportedly set to be series’ last
Based on some of the latest news that is out there, Modern Family season 10 is apparently going to be the series’ last.
The Hollywood Reporter quotes showrunner Steve Levitan as saying the following regarding the show’s future:
“Our plan is to end it at 10. If we can leave with most of our audience wanting more, I think that’s the right way to do it. Never say never, but I just can’t imagine that we’d go past that.”
Is this the right time to end the show? When it comes to a cost basis alone, probably. Television series tend to get incredibly expensive as time goes along, and with this one especially you’d be entering a new threshold that would require even more contract negotiations in the event that you ordered a season 11. Negotiations for some past seasons have already been fairly tense as it is. Trying to expand beyond what you know to be a good thing could prove to be fairly dangerous. You’d be running the risk of putting more episodes out there that ultimately shift the series into something all the more unrealistic. With the children getting older, it’s therefore easy to assume that they are going to be spending a little bit less time at home. That’s inevitable.
A Modern Family season 10 would premiere in the fall, and with ratings falling for the show over the years this move is also the one that makes the most sense commercially.
Who knows, though? We certainly could anticipate a situation coming out in the future in which Modern Family and its cast reunite for some sort of reunion special. This is the sort of show that seems to have a cast who all love working together; while there have been difficult negotiations, they were never about anyone not showing much of an interest in working with one another. It’s always been more about the cast getting the most value for their work.
