Outlander season 4 character questions: The future of David Berry’s Lord John Grey
There’s no real point in hyping this up any more, given that you already know that we’re speaking here about Lord John Grey! David Berry is the brilliant actor behind the character, and through his handful of appearances so far we’ve come to know a great deal about him. He cares for Jamie Fraser and in turn, he comes to also care for Claire. He ended up being essential to Jamie during his time at Helwater, and his presence after the Governor’s Ball ensured that Jamie did not end up heading back to Britain with Captain Leonard and his team.
Clearly, times heave changed mightily for Jamie — and for Lord John — since the image we have above (which is from early on in season 3).
So where could the story go for Lord John Grey moving into season 4? This is not meant to be an article chock full of book spoilers; like some of the other character questions articles we have done on Claire, Murtagh, and Roger, these are spoiler-free speculation pieces that give you a sense as to where some stories could go. This is meant to be a nice bit of fun speculation and discussion for the Droughtlander.
Lord John the welcome wagon
Is it possible that Lord John could help stabilize a home for Jamie and Claire in America? It’s an interesting proposition given just how well-connected he seems to be with a wide array of different characters. With Lord John magically finding himself in Jamaica (is he a Time Lord?), we’re starting to think that he could easily turn up in North Carolina at some point with some new friends and resources to help some of our favorite characters.
If nothing else, maybe Lord John just stops by for a dinner every now and then. He’s like the Outlander version of the fun friend you see whenever you’re in town … only in this case the fun friend who is also in love with Jamie.

Lord John the conduit
Given Lord John’s position as Governor, one of the benefits he could provide Jamie and Claire is information. They’re going to know his location so contact with him shouldn’t be all that hard. That could prove rather valuable in the event John ends up running into some other characters who either know Jamie or Claire or are looking for them in some capacity. Given Jamie/Alexander Malcolm’s reputation, Lord John remains an extremely valuable friend to have.
There’s also of course the fact to remember that Lord John has become surrogate father to Jamie and Geneva’s son William. We’d love to see some sort of reunion there between son and biological father. They clearly have quite a bit to discuss!
Lord John and complications
One of the bigger long-term questions that we have surrounding Lord John is his status within the British government in relation to where Jamie and Claire are now in America. Claire knows that eventually America will rebel from Britain; yet, one of her and Jamie’s good friends is on the other side. Where does that leave all of them come the Revolutionary War? Maybe this is not an issue addressed in Outlander season 4, but it’s something interesting to be contemplated.
Overall, it’s clear even without knowledge of the books that Lord John has quite a future in the series. It’s also certainly possible that his story could have some changes from the books. After all, remember that there were some big changes with the character already in season 3.

You were very astute in your speculations. To stay spoiler-free, I have to stop there, but I do love the Lord John character. He’s fascinating in his own right. (There’s a good reason Diana Gabaldon has written a series of stories/novels already in which he is the protagonist, and I hope to read even more very soon.)

It’s very difficult to respond to this article without spoiling the books. You are correct in your assessment that John remains an important character throughout the series.
Tee hee! :D
