Can Outlander season 4 do anything more to raise Golden Globe nomination odds?

Outlander season 4

Sunday night, NBC is broadcasting the 2018 Golden Globes — with that, we’ll have a wonderful opportunity to see if Caitriona Balfe wins Actress in a Drama Series for the first time.

If you visit the link here, you can read more in terms of the odds of Balfe winning that trophy. With this article, we’re asking a slightly different question, one that is looking all the way up to the 2019 Golden Globes ceremony: What more can Outlander do in order to get a nomination? Does it have a chance of getting more love as a series? Can Sam Heughan finally get the nomination that he deserves?

Trying to figure out the reasons in which Golden Globe nominations are determined is far from an exact science. For one, the identities of the voters are not often clear; beyond that, it’s not as though there is significant exit polling done after the fact. Trying to understand specific preferences of voters is a very difficult things to measure, and at a certain point you do have to stop wondering because it will inevitably drive you mad.

With that, the thing then to wonder is if Outlander can do anything more to improve its odds of nominations across the board. You can argue that strong, character-specific episodes is a fantastic way to make this happen. Think in terms of another Jamie Fraser standout such as “Of Lost Things” or what Balfe got to do as Claire “Uncharted.” While Heughan’s big episode did not lead to a nomination this time around, doing this sort of work is often what can get you recognized. Outlander leaning more into some of these individual character stories could in turn lead to more recognition down the road.

However, at the same time you cannot twist and augment the story in such a way to deliberately try to influence voters. If you are suddenly more concerned with nominations and awards than the integrity of the story, you start to lose the narrative drive. The strength of Outlander is not beholden on whether or not the series or its actors receive nominations; it is more about telling the strongest story that it can. If voters choose to recognize that, it’s wonderful; if not, the show cannot change to try to impress them. That’s why we advocate to not to do anything different or try and guesstimate what it is that voters want. It’s wonderful that Balfe continues to be recognized; even if neither the show or Heughan is in the future, there will absolutely be enough adulation to go around from the fans. Just continue to tell the best story that you can and hope for the best. That’s what we are doing moving into season 4 and the 2019 Globes.
