American Horror Story season 8 set in … the future?
Speaking per Entertainment Weekly while at the TCA Winter Press Tour this week, co-creator Ryan Murphy confirmed that the idea at the center of the next season of the show is to push the show forward. We’re heading to the future for the first time in the history of the series, which really does open up the series to a wide canvas of different possibilities. You could do something controlled by tech a la Black Mirror, or you could go for something a little more dystopian/gritty. Think The Walking Dead in the future without the zombies and where everyone is just killing each other.
The one thing that we do hope is that Murphy considers moving the show away from the hyper-topical/political nature of Cult. We’re certainly not one of those internet commenters who demands that people not profess their political beliefs, but we do think that we’re so inundated with political discourse at the moment that it’s hard for any show to come out and do something that is different and original from what we’ve seen before.
With a story told through the lens of the Presidential Election, it was hard for American Horror Story: Cult to do anything that we haven’t seen before in some other shape or form.

There are still many other questions regarding American Horror Story season 8, with one of the biggest ones being how the show will work out its cast. Many of its series mainstays, including Evan Peters and Sarah Paulson, have some other work planned with Murphy, including Pose and Katrina: American Crime Story. You would think that eventually, something would give and one of the actors would have to leave this show. We’ve been lucky that this is something that hasn’t happened so far.
American Horror Story season 8 will likely premiere this fall.
