American Horror Story: Cult finale: Is Ally the new leader?

American Horror Story: Cult finale

The American Horror Story: Cult finale on FX Tuesday night proved one thing above all else: Ryan Murphy has to end all of the seasons in the craziest manner possible.

Right when you thought that Kai Anderson was behind bars, tonight’s new episode concluded with a stand-off like no other between him and Ally, who made the decision to run for Congress in the aftermath of what transpired to her with Kai and the cult. Little did she realize that he was going to find a way out, and also find a way to threaten her life in front of countless people at the debate.

In the end, though, what we saw was that Kai was ultimately powerless to stop the attack that was coming his way — Ally managed to get a leg up on him and he was killed in front of all of those people. This was a really nasty moment, but this scene did produce one of the best political references of the season with Ally invoking “nasty woman” for her own purposes.

Now, is Ally really a hero? This is the question that the show leaves you with in the closing minutes, as we saw Ally don the infamous Hoodie of Doom (as we like to call it). Was this all a plan for her to seize power of the Cult herself, and did she just use the narrative of her capture to get more attention for herself? Clearly, this is something that the writers want to leave you thinking about. One other possibility is to think of this ending as representative that all politics are (in one way or another) cults — even if Kai is gone, someone else may take his place. They may operate with their own agenda and plans, but there is still a toxicity to what they do. It’s one of the many reasons that this show is interesting despite some of the fluff and the on-the-nose / excessive political dialogue that there was here.

We do think that history will dictate this as one of the better seasons of the show — it actually introduced questions, and it by far is the best Evan Peters season in ages after he’s been woefully under-utilized.
