The X-Files boss talks shocking William premiere twist

X-Files season 11 spoilersThere is one question that is coming out of The X-Files season 11 premiere. It’s a disturbing and difficult one to ask, but the way in which the scene was done raises the question: Did the Cigarette Smoking Man rape Scully? Was his claim that he “impregnated her with science” accurate, or was it a clue at something more dark and horrific?

As it turns out, this is more the former. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, series boss Chris Carter explained what the impregnation line really meant:

“He’s the figurative father if he’s not the actual father. He didn’t rape Scully. He impregnated her with science.”

Carter also confirmed that this is a twist that he’s held in his back pocket ever since the seventh season of the show when Scully was kidnapped. Even that scene, looking back, plays so much more different in 2017 than it did when it first aired many years ago. This may be too icky a twist for some, let alone the sad reality that Mulder is not actually the father of William after we’ve been led to believe that for so many years.

For those who are wondering what the purpose of this twist really is, Carter also added the following there:

“It adds to the characters in an interesting emotional way. And because the audience is now in on this truth, and Mulder and Scully are not, these revelations are huge for this show because they’re huge for the characters. Mulder and Scully’s life history, both professional and personal, are the heart of the show.”

For now, unnerving is the best way to describe this story since it completely alters perception of Scully via what happened to her. This is something that she never asked for from someone who kidnapped her. All of a sudden, the life story of William is all the more haunting and sad. It’s a story worth watching still to see how it plays out, but we can imagine the reactions to this twist being severe, especially since this is a climate of hope in 2018. This story doesn’t not exactly coalesce with that altogether easily.
