Outlander season 4 and the scale of the North Carolina setting
Recently, we posted a piece about Fraser’s Ridge and some of the hype that exists surrounding that location — and understandably so given that it is one of the most iconic in all of the Diana Gabaldon series. It needs to be effectively perfect in order to please many longtime fans. It’s absolutely one of those places where many book readers already have visions of what it looks like.
Rest assured, production designer Jon Gary Steele is aware of how much hype there is! This is why he noted on Twitter as a part of a lengthy thread that they have built more for this season than any other to date — including when they were recreating France back in season 2. He also spoke out about antebellum houses and the role that they play. With all of the building that is being done on this set, there’s a lot to unpack in terms of why it’s happening right now:
1. This is a sign of the series’ success. If the first three seasons weren’t as popular as they were, do you think there would be the budget to make everything so elaborate. It’s hard to think so. With more success comes, in turn, more ambition and a much larger scale.
2. This may also be the show building for the long haul. While Fraser’s Ridge is certainly going to grow and change over the years, this set is going to be one of the most prominent fixtures for years to come, provided that we all get to live the Outlander dream of it staying around for a while. While it remains to be seen how much of the sets they deconstruct between seasons, they could have the architecture in place for years to come.

We’re beyond excited to see the look at the feel for Fraser’s Ridge on Outlander season 4; hopefully, this is something that is shown off well before the show premieres later this year. A tour seems like the perfect behind-the-scenes video for Starz to throw out there in a few months — or, how about releasing some photos? Both seem like worthy possibilities and we’d be more than thrilled to have either one of them.
Filming for Outlander season 4 will hopefully resume in the weeks coming up; once that happens, we’ll have some more news to share.
As always, we welcome some of your thoughts right now in the comments below!
