Outlander season 4: The importance of Fraser’s Ridge

Watch the Outlander season 3 premiere

Are there any other settings coming up on Outlander season 4 as important as Fraser’s Ridge? Heck, are there any settings as important over the entire series to date? You can argue maybe Lallybroch, but Fraser’s Ridge is one of the most important locations within the entirety of the Diana Gabaldon source material. It spans multiple books and, (at one point or another) there are many important characters who all call it home.

You will be seeing Fraser’s Ridge for the first time moving into Outlander season 4, and suffice it to say, it’s important to get the location looking and feeling just right. It needs to have a look that replicates North Carolina, which is a challenge in itself given that the show is filming in Scotland, but it also needs to look like a home. It needs to be warm, inviting, and have many memorable physical features. CarterMatt writes this as a non-book reader, but we know that there are certain characteristics that readers are probably going to be looking to see. The best parallel we can draw here is between Fraser’s Ridge and Hobbiton from The Lord of the Rings. It sets the tone for almost everything else that comes after it.

Will we get an advance, in-depth look at the show’s representation of the region? We hope so. It’d make for a perfect behind-the-scenes featurette! Non-readers aren’t getting much of anything spoiled by learning that Fraser’s Ridge is a place, whereas readers can celebrate getting to see a specific location that they can look forward to seeing more of in the future.

Here’s some good news: We know that there are some of the best people in the business working to make Fraser’s Ridge perfect, and it includes production designer Jon Gary Steele. In a thread over the weekend that CarterMatt was a part of, Steele mention Fraser’s Ridge.

As for when Fraser’s Ridge is introduced on Outlander season 4, we have to hope that it is sooner rather than later. Even though season 3 may have concluded with Jamie and Claire in Georgia, they’re probably going to find a reason to head north before long. This feels like the sort of location the series wants to grow — until we see it, much of the narrative drive for many could be anticipating the moment that they see it. No does anticipation quite like Outlander does!

Outlander season 4 will premiere on Starz late this year; as more information trickles in, we’ll be sure to share.
