The Fosters spin-off coming with Maia Mitchell, Cierra Ramirez

Fosters spin-off

There’s a little bit of good and bad news that CarterMatt has to report today, but let’s start with the good: There’s a The Fosters spin-off coming your way!

According to a report from Deadline, Freeform has officially given the green light to a 13-episode series that will feature both Maia Mitchell as Callie alongside Cierra Ramirez as Mariana. It will be set years in the future, and focus on their work as young adults rather than kids remaining in high school. Callie will be doing her best to continue her work for social good, while you’re going to see Mariana fight to become a major player in the tech world.

Here’s the bad news: The Fosters as we know it is ending with a two-hour finale at the conclusion of season 5. It feels wrong to say that the series is canceled; rather, it’s evolving. The report notes that another original Fosters character could join Callie and Mariana in Los Angeles (where the new season is set); meanwhile, other cast members may stop by as guest stars.

The current executive-producing trio of Bradley Bredeweg, Peter Paige, and Joanna Johnson are expected to continue in their current roles. In a statement, they had the following to say:

“Now that the kids are growing up, it’s time to take them out into the world, to see them make their way into adulthood, continuing their search for identity and love, and the pursuit of their dreams and purpose in this ever-changing world.”

On paper, this sounds like it will be a smart idea. As viewers get older, The Fosters spin-off seems like a great way to continue courting them. Part of the original identity of the series is still intact while you’re adding another new, interesting dimension into the mix. This also goes in the direction that Freeform seems to be moving towards with many of their other series geared towards young adults, including The Bold Type and Famous in Love. They also have a Pretty Little Liars spin-off coming at some point down the road in The Perfectionists, though it’s been a while since details came out on that.
