Game of Thrones stamps coming — in the UK, anyway
The Royal Mail has announced a series of stamps they are coming out with based on some of the characters from the iconic HBO show. Given that these stamps are British, it makes sense that most of the actors featured are British, as well — Emilia Clarke (Daenerys), Charles Dance (Tywin), Lena Headey (Cersei), Kit Harington (Jon), Sophie Turner (Sansa), and Maisie Williams (Arya). There are two stamps featuring non-British actors in Peter Dinklage (Tyrion) and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime), but that makes sense given that you really cannot have a Game of Thrones stamp collection without these two. It’s already tough enough that we have to endure a set that does not include either Sam or Davos.
There are a few bonus stamps in here focusing on specific parts of Game of Thrones lore — direwolves, the White Walkers, and giants. Seriously, giants? They easily could have focused on the dragons here! Who would’ve been altogether upset about that? We also presume that we shouldn’t complain about some of the stamps being a bit dated — after all Daenerys isn’t exactly near Meereen anymore as she’s depicted in the photo below.
While we’re sure that there are some people out there who will actually use some of these stamps in order to mail things (after all, this is the original purpose!), there are probably many others who will hold on to them as valuable collector’s items. Stamps have a way of being one of those collectibles that never quite goes away, even if there really aren’t all that many people at this point sending anything through the mail.
Hopefully, collecting these stamps (they’ll be available starting on January 23) will give something for fans in the UK to do during what is a pretty impossible wait between now and when the show returns to HBO. As of right now new episodes are not slated to premiere until 2019 — filming is not completed yet, and that could still take many more months because of the epic nature of the show with all of the battles.
