Golden Globes 2018: Will Game of Thrones, This Is Us, Stranger Things win Best Drama series?

Golden Globes 2018

With the Golden Globes 2018 airing on NBC Sunday night, it feels like now is the right time to start to look at the overall TV field. Who’s going to win?

Today, CarterMatt’s focus is on one of the biggest categories in Outstanding Drama Series. There are five worthy contenders, but only one winner — there is a clear favorite, but you have to remember that this is the Golden Globes and we’ve come to expect some crazy things to happen.

The nominees

The Crown (Netflix)

Game of Thrones (HBO)

The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu)

Stranger Things (Netflix)

This Is Us (NBC)

What will win – It’s going to almost certainly be The Handmaid’s Tale. The dystopian/somewhat-depressing series has completely cleaned house for much of the year across the awards-show landscape, and we really don’t foresee that things are going to be any different at the Globes. It’s everything that the Globes love — it has an art-house flair to it, it’s based on compelling source material, it features Elisabeth Moss (who was brilliant in Mad Men), and it also has a timely and somewhat-terrifying message at the center of it.

Who should win – That’s a difficult debate. We understand the appreciation for The Handmaid’s Tale, but we’re of a sentiment right now where we don’t necessarily want to be depressed by what we watch on television with so many depressing things happening around the world right now. The Crown is a great contender just because it’s so well-acted and it’s absolutely beautiful to watch. Stranger Things obviously has nostalgia on its side. Game of Thrones is a winner for us when you’re talking about sheer scale, but emotionally you could say that season 7 left something on the table to focus on the spectacle.

If we had to name a favorite, we’d probably go with This Is Us — it’s a story that is so simple in some ways, and yet also incredibly timeless that everyone can relate to on some level. It has a sheer joy and simplicity to it that’s magnetic to watch. It breaks things down into their rawest, purest form.
