The Librarians season 5 renewal odds: How are they shaping up at TNT?

What is the current state of The Librarians season 5? Is it really looking like the odds are all that high of it happening?

Think of this as one of those instances where we wish we could pass along more good news than we have. To date, season 4 of the adventure series is averaging around a 0.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic — a decrease of over 35% from where the show was during the third season. While we don’t like to always blame a show’s ratings on caveats, there are some rather significant ones that need to be considered here.

For starters, think about when The Librarians season 4 is coming on the air — it’s on Wednesday nights, and to go along with that right in the middle of the holiday season. It’s wedged on television at around a time in which there really aren’t all that many people watching TV. It’s also airing over the holidays and in back-to-back bunches. This past episode aired opposite the three-hour Survivor finale on CBS and was a time in which many people out there are concentrating a little more on holiday plans that they are making sure that they are at home in order to check out a show like this live.

So as of right now, we’re concerned about The Librarians season 5. We’re especially concerned just because of the powers that be over at the network. TNT / TBS head Kevin Reilly is showing himself to be rather ruthless when it comes to moving away from older properties and into newer ones. He moved The Last Ship to a spot where it struggled earlier this year, and he effectively buried Major Crimes by premiering the sixth season on Halloween night. While we do love watching episodes of many shows back to back, it’s a large commitment to convince people to sit down and watch two hours of television once a week. If The Librarians does manage to get a season 5 it’ll be a cause of great celebration, mostly because this is not a show being set up all that well in a position to succeed.
