Supergirl season 3: Is this Alex Danvers – Ruby theory too predictable?

Samantha Arias

What’s going to happen to Ruby on Supergirl season 3? One of the biggest mysteries of this season revolves in part around Samantha’s daughter — mostly because there are so many different things that could, in theory, happen with her.

For one, there’s the issue of whether or not Ruby could manifest some sort of powers down the line. She is the biological daughter of Samantha and given that she is a Worldkiller, what does that make her daughter? The idea of half-aliens is not something that has really been addressed all that much on Supergirl to date and could be an interesting avenue to explore. It’s already hard enough being a kid in 2017 (people are mean), so can you imagine trying to do it while also having something about you that is very different then other people. This is assuming that her classmates find out about her heritage, which may not actually ever happen.

Beyond just this, there is of course another question that’s been discussed here at CarterMatt: What happens if Reign is killed? What makes this character especially heartbreaking is that it doesn’t seem as though this is a situation where you can have one part of the person without the other. There may not be any other way to stop Reign other than to kill her, which in turn makes Ruby an orphan. Her father is clearly out of the picture and Samantha’s struggle as a single mom has been a key part of the story so far.

All of this of course brings us to what seems to be a very predictable outcome to this season: Alex Danvers eventually adopts Ruby. At the start of the season Alex and Maggie broke up due to Alex’s desire to have a family — something Maggie did not want. Alex wants to have kids, and we’ve already seen her bond with Ruby. The writing already seems to be on the wall here — the question that you have to ask yourself is whether or not it’s okay for this story to have such a predictable outcome. Should Supergirl be doing something more to spice things up and make this outcome less expected? Or, is it okay that you see it coming when you love the characters and want to see them happy? More than likely, this is the question you’re going to be asking yourselves for at least the next run of episodes over the winter.

What do you think is going to be coming up with Ruby on Supergirl, and are there any particular avenues you want to see explored? Be sure to share now in the attached comments right now!
