The Voice finale: Brooke Simpson original song What is Beautiful, music video

Brooke Simpson is a finalist competing on The Voice finale tonight, and we’ve got a preview now of her original song “What Is Beautiful.”

You can hear the song leading up to the show tonight on iTunes. Out of all of the original songs that are out there for the finale, we’ll go ahead and say that “What Is Beautiful” is probably our favorite. It’s got a refrain that echoes through the iTunes preview that feels simple yet perfect for her. It’s not the most complicated song lyrically but it doesn’t need to be. What’s most important here is that melodically this song is immediately recognizable and it resonates very well. You get carried away in the melody to the point where you don’t get caught up on the lyrics and waiting on what the next word is going to be.

While we do think that Brooke Simpson is entering the finale a big-time underdog (Addison Agen and Chloe Kohanski are the clear favorites), this should help her edge herself closer to the top of the pile.  In general, one of the major questions that we’ve got about some of these original songs is why they all have to be ballads. We can see them being a part of a touring set, but we don’t see any of them getting major play on the radio down the line.

“What Is Beautiful” was written by the team of Chelsea Lena Silon, Robert John Richardson, and Bianca Atterberry. It’s an experienced team working to deliver this song behind the scenes but it’ll be up to Brooke to sell it while out on the stage.

Beyond just getting to perform her original song, you’ve got a pair of other Brooke Simpson performances coming your way tonight — a duet with Miley Cyrus to her hit “Wrecking Ball” (probably smart to perform one of your coach’s greatest hits alongside her) plus also “O Holy Night” — hey, someone is actually doing a Christmas song! It’s also religious so she’ll get that voting block.
