Call the Midwife 2017 Christmas Special: Helen George, cast detail story

Call the Midwife Christmas Special

The Call the Midwife 2017 Christmas Special is just one week away from airing; with that, Helen George and the cast are here to set things up!

In the new video below you can see George, plus many actors and creator Heidi Thomas, explain some of what the story is going to be this year. It’s the winter of 1962/1963, otherwise known as “The Big Freeze.” It’s one of the most noteworthy winters in the history of the UK, one where there is countless snow and freezing temperatures. These are the sort of conditions that would make many people out there not altogether interested in going to work!

Yet, at the same time being a midwife is not the sort of job you can call in sick for and have it not weigh on your conscience to some degree. There are many new mothers out there desperate for your help, almost more so because of the conditions. Electricity is down in some places and, to go along with that, the plumbing isn’t working everywhere. As some of these midwives do everything that they can in order to help mothers-to-be all over Poplar and beyond they’re going to have a heck of a lot that they need to contend with. Part of the enjoyment of this special should come courtesy of watching them conquer some of this and hopefully give people out there a better, happier future.

At the end of the video Thomas does remind us that crafting happy endings is not always exclusively the goal of these specials, as there is meant to be a little bit of a bittersweet tone in the air. Christmas may be a happy and joyous time of year for some, but for others it is a difficult time of reflection and loneliness. You cannot fully show one side without the other.

One thing that is especially nice about this video is that at the end of it, you can see air times and dates for the episode not only in America and the United Kingdom, but also Australia.
