Call the Midwife 2017 Christmas Special video: Making winter magic

Call the Midwife 2017 Christmas Special

The Call the Midwife 2017 Christmas Special is coming in just over 10 days! It’s an exciting occasion every year, but this year feels somewhat different.

After all, the Call the Midwife Christmas Special this year is being based on a very specific period in British history — The Big Freeze. This period of time at the end of 1962 going into 1963 was an especially notable. There were mountains of snow across London, temperatures were freezing indoor plumbing, and there were even parts of the city without power. It was one of the toughest times weather-wise of the entire decade for British people and this special will be a reflection of some of those struggles and what some people did in order to get through this.

In the new video below (courtesy of the series’ official YouTube channel), you get a pretty good sense from some of the cast as to what it was like filming within these conditions — which were of course artificial, because of the way in which production for the series is timed out. Filming for the Christmas Special took place in May — therefore, all of the snow and the cold conditions that you see on the screen are movie magic. There are specific tricks used to make the snow and to ensure that the air feels as cold and as wintry as possible. We appreciate the show making these videos given that it allows you a chance to have a window into what it is like producing a TV show on this scale. The folks who work on Call the Midwife know just how important these Christmas Specials are — they generate big ratings, and more than that, they are also a part of tradition. People love to sit down to watch the special with their family, so the network wants to create the best overall product possible. This special is a labor of love and CarterMatt is confident that it is going to be a thing of beauty in the end.

Remember, the special this year is going to air on Christmas Day in the UK on BBC One and in America on PBS.
