The Call the Midwife Christmas Special is almost right around the corner! The series is returning to the BBC and PBS later this month and it’s a chance to ring in the holiday season with some of your favorite midwives. We know already that this is going to be one of the coldest winters we’ve seen featured on Call the Midwife to date.
So what’s specifically coming for some of your favorite characters? Thanks to the official Call the Midwife Facebook Page, we are lucky to have a handful of teases.
Phyllis – “As we’ll discover, Phyllis’s attitude to any obstruction – whether human or made of snow – is to meet icy challenge by ploughing straight on through…”
Valerie Dyer – “We are just thrilled with what Jennifer [Kirby] has brought to the role. She has beauty, intelligence and insight in equal measure, and brings a wonderful subtlety and emotional depth to her portrayal … At Christmas, all of these qualities will be tested to the full, as Valerie is forced to deal with unexpected consequences…”
You can also see the new Call the Midwife Christmas Special photo above via the page and the network, and it gives you a sense that no matter how cold it may be outside, the midwives are still going to be happy to go about their lives and doing some of the work that they love. The irony here remains that they likely filmed the bulk of this summer in the spring / summer using fake snow — that’s just the way that you have to do it in the TV business sometimes.
One other bit of good news for US viewers — while UK viewers have long had a chance to see the series on Christmas Day, you can also check out the Call the Midwife Christmas Special on December 25! Check it out on PBS at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time right before you settle in for a long winter’s nap. The next season of the show should premiere in the UK at some point in the new year, whereas it will air in America at some point in the spring.
