NCIS season 15 debate: Should Gabriel Hicks be new Big Bad?

Earlier this season on NCIS, we were introduced for the first time to a dangerous man in Gabriel Hicks. What makes this character (played by Graham Hamilton) so interesting and dangerous isn’t just what he is capable of doing physically; mentally, he may be one of the more intimidating foes that Agent Gibbs and company have squared off against in quite some time.

Think back to earlier this season, when Hicks effectively convinced Gibbs and Sloane to work alongside them — he effectively secured his own escape. He duped two people who are not often duped and, as a result of that, is now somewhere out there free. Given that Gibbs is now very well aware of how dangerous this guy is, what does he now have to lose? He’s more uninhibited than before — at least provided that he’s in such a situation that he needs to be. Hicks could be in hiding, or it could be halfway around the world. We know that he’s still on Gibbs’ mind — there was visual proof of that following his initial appearance on the show.

This leads us back to the question at the start of this article: Should Gabriel Hicks become the Big Bad for the rest of the season? There is a strong case to be made for it, starting from the fact that he is memorable. This isn’t your typical terrorist that the NCIS team is trying to track down overseas — he’s someone they’ve squared off against at home and he’s already bested them. He’s shown himself to have the upper hand. That may motivate NCIS more to stop them, but that motivation could also lead to recklessness if Hicks finds a way to remain one step ahead of them at all times. He could best the team again in a February episode before the team all has some sort of final showdown come May sweeps.

We’re realistic about the number of times NCIS season 15 would use Gabriel Hicks — this is not a super-serialized show and with that, you’re lucky to get a recurring villain on three or four occasions in a season. Still, the foundation for this character is worthy of this many appearances and we’re eager to see it happen. NCIS has great heroes, but in order to make them pop you do at times also need a noteworthy villain.
