The Crown season 2 ratings estimates are in — what do they mean?

Crown season 2

The Crown season 2 ratings are starting to come in — or at least estimates of these ratings.

The first thing that we should note here is that these ratings are not official in that Netflix has not released them. They are based on Nielsen SVOD Content Ratings, which are probably the best overall resource out there for this sort of information.

Through the first three days of the Crown season 2 being available on Netflix, a grand total of around 3 million viewers watched it in America. This is a stark contrast to the premiere of Stranger Things 2, which generated almost 16 million viewers during its first day.

Yet, CarterMatt would argue that there are some factors that have to be considered here that distort some of these numbers. For one, you must remember that Stranger Things is the sort of show you have to watch immediately. It’s an event and one that features a lot of spoilery content. If you don’t watch it within the first couple of days there’s a good chance one of your friends (or everyone on the internet) will end up ruining the season for you.

However, in the case of The Crown there really isn’t any urgency to watch the series right away. This is a show that is based on history and therefore, there aren’t all that many spoilers to hand down. It’s the perfect show to watch over the course of the holidays when there isn’t all that much going on and everyone can just sit back, relax, and enjoy the show without disruption. We feel like The Crown viewers are a little more interspersed over time because of that.

Aside from all of this, The Crown is extremely valuable to Netflix even if the ratings aren’t anywhere near as big. For one, it’s an enormous awards-show contender and it gives them significant prestige. Beyond that, it also brings in a wealthy audience. Some of the Nielsen data indicates that viewers for The Crown skew older and with money to burn — what’s important about this is that the show may court a different demographic than Stranger Things or many other Netflix shows. You want to get viewers of all different demographics in order to appeal to the widest array of subscribers possible.
