Floribama Shore ratings: Is it making an impact on MTV?
We were curious as to whether or not the recent Saturday Night Live spoof would cause the series to spike up in popularity, and that hasn’t quite happened. Instead, TVbythenumbers reports that Monday’s episode generated just over 800,000 viewers and a 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic.
Do we think that those numbers are viable enough for MTV to stay in the Floribama Shore business for a rather long time? Sure, mostly because this show can’t be all that expensive to make and all it takes is one viral moment sometimes for a show to escalate in popularity. Remember that Jersey Shore wasn’t a smash until the incident where Snooki was punched in the face by a grown man and then everyone was talking about it. The success of many of the network’s shows at this point is largely dependent on getting people talking, and depending on what happens the rest of the season that could happen. Personally, we’ve noted that there are some entertaining moments in the first handful of episodes — but also not ones that are so memorable beyond the premiere that they’ll be remembered long down the road.
If we were MTV, here’s what we would advise in the future if they really want to bank on Floribama Shore having a long life — put repeats of the first season on after the upcoming Jersey Shore Family Vacation or renew the show quickly enough that you can get another season made. Expose old viewers to the new flavor and see what happens. While this show is still very much in the Jersey Shore vein of drinking and partying, it’s a very different show and that’s all due to the cast and their backgrounds. Jersey Shore was a shore that was fun to watch, but hard to relate to the cast where as Floribama Shore has a lot of cast members that have lived a lot of life for such a young age that there are many relatable moments.
For now, though, there’s nothing for MTV to be upset about here, but the show’s unique brand of craziness isn’t drawing the big numbers and pop-culture buzz that Jersey Shore once did. Things are just harder now that Netflix / DVRs are more prominent and the show doesn’t have the same originality stamp going for it.
