Matt Smith on leaving The Crown after season 2

Crown season 2

Matt Smith is leaving The Crown after season 2, but the news of that really should not be a surprise to anyone. The entire cast is being flipped! This has been the plan from the beginning, as the series is ambitiously moving forward to a new era and that, in turn, requires new characters in the role. Clearly, writer Peter Morgan and the rest of the team felt as though recasting was more realistic and practical than trying to do something so crazy as putting Claire Foy, Vanessa Kirby, and the rest of the cast into old-age makeup on a daily basis.

The Crown may feel a bit jarring when it returns for season 3 as a result of all of the change, but we do feel like in the end, we’ll get used to it. We often do. It certainly seems like Smith is used to the idea, as well. He has stated in past interviews that his experience leaving Doctor Who helped to prepare him to say goodbye to Philip, and he’s honestly happy about the opportunity to do something else now as opposed to just playing the same role for six seasons as many TV actors often do.

With that said, there are still a number of things that Smith is apparently going to miss. For a little bit more news on that subject, be sure to check out some of what he had to say in an interview with IndieWire:

“I’ll miss Claire. And I’ll miss Vanessa. I’ll miss my friends. I’ll miss Stephen Daldry. And I’ll miss the quality of the writing. Peter’s writing is so brilliant … But I feel really lucky that I’ve got to play this wonderful iconic man and that it was different to the work I’d done before. A bit like I did with ‘Doctor Who,’ I’ll just tune in as a fan.”

The Crown season 3 will probably have a great deal of material to tackle, but admittedly what we’re the most curious about at the moment is what is going to be coming a few seasons down the road. Is The Crown season 6 going to tackle Brexit, Trump, or any of the other chaos going on today? This is clearly one of the craziest eras in history in a rather long time, and that of course will likely lead to plenty of content.
