Gillian Anderson, David Duchovny on the state of Mulder, Scully in X-Files season 11

With The X-Files season 11 premieres on Fox in the new year, the state of Mulder and Scully will be front and center. These two characters know each other very well, and we’ve also seen them in just about every facet of a relationship that two people could have: Colleagues, lovers, parents, spouses, and estranged. They’ve been through highs and lows, and watching them evolve is one of the joys of the series. Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny do a fantastic job working through all of these different dimensions of the characters and in season 11, the evolution is only going to continue.

So are the characters going to be getting romantic once again? There are absolutely some hints of it in the new video below featuring Anderson and Duchovny, where the two parties address the elephant in the room and how they seem to be closer this year than they were in season 10. We absolutely love the way Anderson explains it:

“I’d say we’re kind of back to where we were originally, but without the sexual tension because we’ve already had sex.”

It makes a certain degree of sense that the two characters would be feeling closer moving into season 11, if for no other reason than that they’re working on a mission so inherently personal: The search for their son William. It may allow the two to think back to a different, easier time in their lives — one where they were able to work together and have that some sort of romantic chemistry and passion before much of the pain.

One way or another, we do certainly hope as though The X-Files offers up as much closure as humanly possible on the subject of Mulder and Scully. There’s no guaranteed future beyond on it and if past comments from Anderson are any indication, it’s not likely we’ll see the story continue in the same way that it has. Just enjoy however much of the show there is left.
