The Fosters season 5: Execs reflect on 100 episodes
The Fosters season 5 is returning to Freeform with new episodes starting in the new year and as many fans already know, the 100th episode is a part of the run! This is a huge celebration — it’s a culmination of so much hard work and passion from everyone behind the scenes who puts all of their blood, sweat, and tears (figuratively, anyway) into making this show the best that it can possibly be.
For the people working behind the scenes, the journey to make it to 100 episodes is even longer and harder than for those watching the show back. These are people who lived with the show months before it ever came on the air and worked through all the problems and the anxiety over the ratings. It was not an easy process dealing with all of the hurdles, but they’ve conquered all of them.
In speaking on the subject of this milestone to Entertainment Weekly executive producers Peter Paige and Bradley Bredeweg passed along the following message reflecting on what the journey to this point has been so far:
“It’s hard to believe it’s been five years and 100 episodes … Feels like just last week we were scouting locations for a little pilot that nobody thought was sell-able, much less that it would run this long. What a privilege to be able to tell these stories, on this family, with this truly brilliant cast and crew. We’re as lucky as you can be.”
The reason why there was such doubt at the time of the pilot was because this was not a show that had really done before — a series about fosters parents with lesbian matriarchs and children from all walks of life. It tackled tough social issues while still being relatable to teens. It’s a positive message and we know that networks love that; the challenge that we often see is that shows that are inspirational in nature don’t often get pickups or renewals. It’s often hard to convince viewers to watch shows that aren’t all brooding and drama all of the time — The Fosters certainly does have plenty of that, but there’s a larger purpose here and that is something that they have shine through with every episode.
The 100th episode coming up in the next part of season 5 will almost certainly reflect some of these inspirational undertones and we’re excited to see how it unfolds.
