Shadowhunters star Dominic Sherwood apologizes over use of gay slur

Shadowhunters star Dominic Sherwood put himself in a completely senseless position earlier this week. Right in the middle of his co-star Matthew Daddario’s Facebook Live video, he chose to come in with a gay slur. It was brief, but it incited anger among many — and understandably so. It’s not the sort of word you ever want to hear used, especially within the context of this show. Shadowhunters is one of the most inclusive series on television, and the relationship between Daddario’s Alec and Harry Shum Jr.’s Magnus is one of the most popular LGBTQ ones on television.

Earlier this week, Sherwood did issue an apology on Instagram for his comments in an Instagram video alongside Daddario:

“I’m speaking to all of you today to hold myself accountable, and not to make any excuses in any way … The way I behaved today was disgusting and abhorrent and Matt’s reaction was absolutely correct. It was one of disgust.

“I think so many problematic phrases go unchallenged and they perpetrate negativity and hate and intolerance … And today I was a part of that and I am truly, truly sorry.”

Sherwood’s video came during what was meant to be a fun day with a lot of Shadowhunters-related content. Since the comment, (and before and after the apology) the reaction from many Shadowhunters fans has been fairly strong and severe. We’ve heard of everything from calls for him to be fired to all sorts of other anger. For now, it appears as though the parties are going to do their best to try and move forward and repair the damage that was done. The truth here for Sherwood is that one apology is not going to be enough to overwrite what has been done. This is going to take a great deal of time for him to show another side and turn things around. Will he have that opportunity? Probably, given that he will likely have to address it across a number of promotional platforms again, as well as some conventions if he ends up attending some of those in the future.

As for Shadowhunters itself…
