New SNL promo with Saoirse Ronan, U2, Kenan Thompson all about pronunciation

Saoirse RonanThere’s a new SNL promo with Saoirse Ronan, U2, and Kenan Thompson online courtesy of NBC. How is it? Well, it’s almost exactly what you would have expected.

There are two things that you should know about the lineup for the first show of December — both Ronan and U2 come from Ireland, and it’s almost impossible for anyone in America to understand how to pronounce Ronan’s first name. Surprisingly, this promo focuses exclusively on the former over the latter, though we’re sure that there will be some sort of sketch this weekend all about how to pronounce “Saoirse” so you can go ahead and prepare for that. This is an enjoyable enough video, though we do think the whole “Americans can’t understand Irish people” and vice-versa angle is appealing to the lowest common denominator a little bit.

So why is Ronan hosting the show now? Think of this as SNL getting ahead of the curve a little bit. Saoirse is one of the stars of Lady Bird, a movie anticipated to make a big splash this awards season. There’s been Oscar buzz around her performance, and we’ve seen the show in the past try to get contenders to host their December shows. There’s another fun TV connection with Lady Bird — at one point, the movie’s director in Greta Gerwig was attached to star in How I Met Your Dad, a spin-off-of-sorts to How I Met Your Mother that never made it past the pilot phase.

As for U2, it’s not hard to see why SNL would want them — they’re U2. Regardless of whether or not you love their music it’s hard to argue against them being one of the biggest bands ever. This is a great month for music on SNL in general, given that Foo Fighters are going to be closing out the month and Grammy-nominated SZA also has a performance lined up on December 9. If you want to see some of the hosts for these shows then head over to the link here.

One of the other remaining points of curiosity is strictly this: Getting a chance to see how hard SNL goes at Matt Lauer. The disgraced former Today Show anchor was already mocked by both late-night hosts Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers and we expect it to happen here too.
