Outlander season 3 episode 11 ratings preview: Will ‘Uncharted’ draw new course?
As we reported a number of days ago, Outlander is coming off of its lowest ratings of the entire season. 1.23 million viewers caught the episode “Heaven & Earth” and after spending the past four days really thinking over what happened there the biggest conclusion we’ve drawn is this: There were simply a smaller pool of viewers available that night. Diehard fans may have watched the show early on the app, and casual viewers / non book-readers may have just left it on their DVR for later. It was a busy night with the American Music Awards, the NFL, and of course Thanksgiving coming up. There was a lot for people to juggle and that showed with the ratings for other shows including The Walking Dead, NCIS: Los Angeles, and Good Behavior on TNT. All of them posted some of the lowest ratings of the season.
What you always must remember is that when we’re referring to ratings in these articles, we’re talking just about live+same-day ratings. This is not about how many total viewers each episode actually gets because it’s often more than four times the number who actually watch live. The importance of live viewers is mostly to engage the immediate impact of the show, something that is very important to Starz in terms of how they market and promote it. The sooner viewers watch and the more they can proclaim that this is appointment viewing at its finest.
Going into season 3 episode 11 entitled “Uncharted,” there’s a clear reason for optimism — it’s the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Most prospective viewers are home from wherever they traveled to and there are no major awards shows. The competition that is on the air is the same that’s been on there every Sunday. The ratings as of late have been lower so it’s unfair to say that Outlander is going to experience some sort of sudden surge; yet, we do think that there are reasons to expect and hope for a turnaround. This episode could bring Jamie and Claire closer to a reunion and as we near the finale, we do think in general numbers will rise. It wouldn’t come as a shock to see the numbers rise to around 1.4 million again and continue to move in a positive direction up until the last episode. That one will likely draw some of the biggest numbers of the season, largely because there’s a sentiment that if you don’t watch it live, someone will likely come in and spoil everything for you. (Yeah, we know there are spoilers out there in the books, but still.)

I am sure the ratings will improve for the next three episodes. I don’t know by how much though
I don’t live in US, therefore my viewing vote doesn’t count unfortunately. However to all of you who live in US and Canada and have a chance to view it live, PLEASE do it!
That will make our case stronger to get early renewal of the series!
Thank you and stay awesome!

Barb Delaney, you and I agree. We can watch so much tv and movies on other channels. I too signed up for Starz because of Outlander and only because of Outlander. I do hope Starz has someone on their staff that reads our postings on line…. do you know the resason why the fans outside the United States and Canada don’t count in the viewing audience??? That’s crazy. I write to several people in UK that buy Starz because of Outlander and the Books. The show has a huge following. There are two guys I follow on Utube that devought much of their channels content to Outlander, Shaun and the Roming Scot. Are you familiar with them? I watch My Outlander Purgatory, and listen to Lani on her Outlander show? All different but great fun… are there any you watch or listen to?
Are you also a POLDARK fan? Oh heavens i adore that show too. Not a time travel show at all, but a fantastic period piece. Poldark is also written from a character in a series of books.

yes Poldark is my second favorite. As for Shaun and the Roming Scot and the rest of the places you say you listen to I”m not familiar can you enlighten me. I love anything Outlander and Poldark. I just wish Poldark has more episodes. I always buy the DVD on both shows as soon as they are available. I can then watch them any time I want which is often

While your assessment may be a valid factor, I do think it has also fallen off because once they got Claire and Jamie back together, the quality of the show dropped off because they went back to character changes in both that make their relationship implausible and unequal, and viewer enjoyment is reduced. I have stuck with it but haven’t enjoyed the character direction the last few episodes reverted to. Character consistency will bring ratings back up. I just saw 311 and I liked it. I liked it because the characters were back to behaving and thinking as they should be. Every time I get an episode like that, I hope that going forward now their characters will stabilize but then they go right back to inconsistency in new episodes. So far purely a strong sense of loyalty has kept me watching this series. But I’ve lost interest, there isn’t the excitement if I miss an episode when first aired. I don’t discuss it with everyone as I used to. It is not due to being a third season but rather to its being a mediocre one all told.

Have you read any of the books? YOU might want to try them if not

I have read all the books, many times, since 1989. That is why I have take such exception to character inaccuracies and inconsistencies.

it’s an adaption ….no book can be reproduced on screen word for word and yes I’ve read them too.

if it annoys you so much turn it off. There is a channel changer on your tv isn’t there?

Indeed there is one — and I have used it on several episodes this season. Which is, again, an example of the entire point I was making in response to why I think ratings have suffered.

you are in the minority it seems. YOU seem to love attention so go watch the zombie show because it seems that’s your style

Becky, I responded to an invitation for readers to comment on the ratings, and I did so in a rational manner. You could agree with my take or not, and it would be fine. It is my opinion. But another reader chose to take me on. I responded to her in the same tone that she addressed me. No offense intended towards you or other readers.

Thank you for the response and being polite.
I haven’t read the books yet, therefore im blissfully ignorant with no specific expectations.
However I can completely understand the frustration of a die hard book reader when the source material gets disrespected.
I cannot comment on the specific of those changes though, I just wonder the reasons why that happened/ing though. Is that just the egos of the writers who think they can say a better story or is it practicality choice of adapting the book onto the screen.
All I know is that I am still enjoying the show immensely and I’m very much looking forward to reading the books when the show is over.
All the best!

I’ve read the books too more than once. No movie or show can do an adaption exactly like the book. I think in my opinion they do a great job of portraying Claire and Jamie. You might want to try them and form your opinion.

I definitely will check them out.
However I do agree with you that no movie or show can do an exact adaption of a book. It just that the medium is so different.
Therefore personally I prefer to enjoy the show first (without having expectations) and later I can check the source material.

I completely agree with Sally Gee in her post. I have read all books five times and I felt for the most part 311 was like a soap opera. It was so disappointing and made me sad. This show has been spectacular in so many ways. The writing, scenery, costumes, filming, and of course Sam and Caite. There would not be the following without all these wonderful people. Is everyone exhausted with the pace of the show?
Being used to the books I know you could not have put all the details and characters in the TV show as it would be impossible. I miss them. Or maybe I miss the conversations between the main characters. I will always be loyal to the show as there is nothing else like it to watch. I cannot wait till they get to the Ridge. Maybe without all their travels things will
settle down.

Unfortunately, the folks who enjoy trashing the series used your post from last week to announce the “death” of Outlander. Pretty sad.

What the hell there doing what
becky
November 27, 2017 @ 3:24 pm
I think it’s unfair to say that.
The majority of disappointed comments seems are coming from the diehard book readers.
I haven’t read the books yet, therefore it’s my blessing to not have any expectations and I do enjoy the journey.
But I can understand the dissatisfaction and frustration of those who lived and breathed these characters for decades. Any deviation from the source is a no no, especially with regards to characters development.
When that happens your only option is to shout as loud as you can, hoping to be heard by the people responsible producing the show. I genuinely don’t think people want the show to fail, contrary they super passionate and want it to succeed.
Last but not the least, the die hard book readers are at the core of this fandom therefore it would be really stupid gamble to annoy them by unnecessary changes.
Apologies for rumble, English is not my first language but I hope you get my point.
Have a nice day all

You know – I’m a devote and I never watch it live. Once I discovered that it airs in the AM on Starz on demand the morning of the debut of a new episode, I watch it EARLY! So far the first season was my favorite (partly because I love Jamie in a kilt), but it’s an epic story that spans time and place, which is why it is so beloved.
