How American Horror Story: Cult finale ratings set stage for season 8
Based on the just-released numbers, there is some reasonably good news for the series — but also some unfortunate news when it comes to the franchise’s future as one of the biggest in all television. The finale entitled “Great Again” ended up drawing a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is a healthy increase from the week before. Yet, you can also argue that this ratings improvement is expected for a couple of different reasons. For one, it’s the finale — few people want to miss checking out that story live and be spoiled as to what happened during it. Beyond that, there was the possibility of a few season 8 teasers — we don’t think there were any huge clues, but there are plenty of people out there who do their best in order to find little teases here and there.
Here’s where things are a little bit sadder when it comes to American Horror Story season 8. As a whole the show averaged a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic, and that is a drop of around 30% from the seventh season that aired before it. That’s the biggest drop from one season to the next yet. As a result of that the writers do need to figure out a way in which to build a story in season 8 that is going to be able to attract viewers from the get-go — this franchise tends to get a big lift from some of its premieres and as a result of that, we definitely think that it is to its benefit that it comes up with an exciting and non-political premise. You need to attract some viewers who have never seen the show before, and maybe also some who may have caught a past season but bailed for one reason or another. This is not an easy challenge, but one of the benefits of an anthology is that you do get chances to change things up year in and year out.
