Law & Order: SVU season 19: What to look forward to

Is Law & Order: SVU new tonight on NBC? At first glance, you would assume so — both The Blacklist and Chicago PD are!

Unfortunately, the bad news here is that you’re not going to be seeing Olivia Benson and company for two more weeks(!) when the show airs “Something Happened” on Wednesday, November 29. Tonight NBC is airing The Voice in a special timeslot, and next week is the day before Thanksgiving and the network clearly doesn’t want to turn this show into a sacrificial lamb. That’s probably a good thing given that it’s one of their top-rated shows.

NBC technically announced the SVU return date last week, but don’t be upset if you forgot about it — so did we at first! Happens to us all.

Trust us, though, when we saw that SVU will prove to be worth the wait. “Something Happened” is a very different sort of episode than one you’ve grown accustomed to, but it’s also one of the best. We don’t want to give anything away, but we will say this: By the time the end credits roll you may clamoring more than ever for Mariska Hargitay to get some nominations in the Emmys/Golden Globes. It’s one that is very much worth the wait.

Before the end of the year, there are a couple of different things you can expect to see from SVU, including a little more of the Sheila storyline and also some cases that will feel very relevant to modern-day issues — even if they are not “ripped from the headlines” they are going to echo some of what is happening across the news today.

After some more episodes later this year there will be a handful of new SVU episodes in the new year — presumably as many as five — before NBC puts their scripted programming on hiatus for the Winter Olympics. It’s the sort of thing that they do every year, but it’s easy to forget about it given that the Olympics are such an irregular occurrence. The one advantage to having it this way is that this hiatus notwithstanding, some of the others will be clearly defined in advance.

What do you want to see on SVU when the show returns, and are you bummed that there is no new episode tonight? Share in the comments!
