American Idol 16 video: Marvin Jones Jr. of Detrioit Lions performs!

Marvin Jones

We’ve just gotten a chance to see our first American Idol 16 audition of the season — and it features an NFL player to boot!

In the video below (via ESPN), you can see none other than Marvin Jones Jr. of the Detroit Lions show up in front of Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan in order to impress them with something other than just his moves on the field. He gives them a pretty lovely performance in here of “I Can’t Make You Love Me” — it’s not the first thing you would picture when you think about a guy like him out in the field, but that’s a big part of what makes this such an exciting performance! It’s a breath of fresh air and a reminder that NFL players are often so much more than whatever we perceive them to be from what we see of them out there performing on the field. That often doesn’t do a great job giving us an accurate representation of what these people are really like.

We would be shocked if Jones is featured on the actual show beyond the audition round at most, largely because this seems like something created mostly for promotional purposes. Also, he’s already got a day job! What makes this so notable to us is that it presents an opportunity to see how these judges all react to an audition — which, for the most part, they do a rather good job at here. The one thing that we will say is this: Why not make these auditions even more transparent? We wish sometimes that the producers would just show the sheets of paper or the notes that the judges receive before some auditions. For example, clearly Perry was told that he was an NFL player going in.

American Idol 16 premieres this March on ABC — yep, it is still a rather long wait.
