Outlander season 4 filming update: Sam Heughan’s progress report and more

Outlander season 4 filming

Outlander season 4 filming is going strong in Scotland. How strong, do you ask? The first block of episodes is done!

In a post on Twitter, Sam Heughan confirmed this glorious news. For those wondering, a block is often a group of episodes / scenes that is a little bit easier sometimes to follow from a production standpoint. Because Outlander films only thirteen episodes a season, that gives the show a chance to produce and film the show differently. It can film things out of order at times and work based on their locations and the actors that they have available.

The most important thing to note is this: Despite the cold temperatures / typical Scottish weather this time of year filming is going along swimmingly! Remember that this season the show’s filming location is doubling for North Carolina. It will likely look rather different than the first two seasons; the irony is that the show is using a place that may only be hundreds of miles away at most, from where they were previously.

If the current filming timeline holds, Outlander season 4 should have its filming complete in either the late spring/early summer. This affords Starz the opportunity to premiere again in the fall.

For those wondering, we’re very much aware the above photo of Heughan is from Sunday’s episode and not season 4 — it’s just a boss photo and we haven’t had many opportunities to use it yet.

What else should you know?

The fourth season will feature many familiar faces. Entertainment Weekly reports that Cesar Domboy, Lauren Lyle, Sophie Skelton, and Richard Rankin will all be returning to the show as Fergus, Marsali, Brianna, and Roger, respectively … not that any of this should be a surprise based on the Diana Gabaldon source material. There is the same lack of mystery when it comes to Young Ian (John Bell) — while we may not be a book reader, at the same time we do have enough of an understanding of the series to know where things are going in a general sense.

To us, the primary mystery that matters when it comes to Outlander is the status of Duncan Lacroix as Murtagh. He is the man who really shouldn’t still be alive; with that, learning what happens with him should be tremendously exciting. Maybe he turns up on the ship over the next few episodes of season 3, or maybe he finds a way to be roped into the season 4 story?
