Scandal season 7 episode 6 to play host to … Taylor Swift performance?

If you are not a fan of Taylor Swift, this is probably not going to be the best week in the world for you. The singer is everywhere! Her new album Reputation is coming out soon and many networks, (knowing that she is one of the top-selling stars on the planet) are doing everything that they can to capitalize on that for the sake of their own ratings. Swift is on Saturday Night Live this weekend, and she’s also going to be appearing during Scandal season 7 episode 6 on Thursday night.

She won’t be in the episode itself — sorry to some of you out there who were hoping to get a glimpse of Swift versus Olivia Pope or Quinn Perkins. Instead, she will be performing a new song during a commercial break. There’s a small preview of this that you can see below.

CarterMatt is not a music website, so it’s really not the goal here for us to assess or break down the latest Taylor Swift performance. However, what we can say is that from a marketing standpoint this is pretty smart for both parties. Swift’s album is on the cusp of debuting in stores, and diehard fans will probably care enough to want to watch the show live and check this out. Meanwhile, it makes sense for ABC to pick this up to boost the ratings of their TGIT lineup, which at this point is mostly a reminder of how much they screwed up by allowing Shonda Rhimes to sign a deal over at Netflix. They’ve still got her shows, but they’re not going to have any of her new ones. Remember, it’s been a good seven years since a show created solely by Rhimes has aired — she’s probably got some good ideas.

If there is a criticism that we’ve got of the move, it’s this — why in the world is this not airing during Grey’s Anatomy instead of Scandal? Swift’s love of Grey’s Anatomy is well-documented, it’s the 300th episode tonight, and she even had Ellen Pompeo make an appearance alongside Mariska Hargitay (one of her other TV heroes) in the music video for “Bad Blood.”
