Shameless season 9 renewal official after big season 8 premiere ratings
In a statement, Showtime’s President and CEO David Nevins had the following to say about the series coming back:
“As challenging as it can be for any show simply to maintain viewers in the current TV landscape, Shameless is adding them in droves … But it’s no mystery why. The series’ reputation for rich and resonant characters and for deep — and deeply twisted — comedy has drawn not only faithful longtime viewers, but a steadily growing audience. And creatively, the season that kicked off this past Sunday is stronger than ever.”
Meanwhile, showrunner John Wells also had the following to pass along:
“We are so grateful to Showtime for giving us the opportunity to continue making Shameless. It’s a labor of love (and a blast) for all of us.”
What is so significant about this is that the renewal makes Shameless on one of the network’s longest-running series to date — Dexter and Weeds both made it to eight seasons and with this show, there’s no reason to think that it’s slowing down. It is coming off of some of its best premiere ratings in years and to go along with that, is performing incredibly well in streaming measures. This show’s power as a binge-watching machine is widely considered to be one of the reasons for its surge in popularity. Typically shows this late in their run start to wane, but the Gallagher family is still going strong — we just think that there are some viewers out there who didn’t realize the show existed until recently and are just now getting a chance to dive into episodes.
Shameless also continues to be aided by an exceptional cast featuring the likes of William H. Macy, Emmy Rossum, Cameron Monaghan, and many others.
