Supergirl season 3 spoilers: Brainiac 5 cast — the Mon-El connective tissue

Supergirl season 3 episode 4

We’re almost five episodes into Supergirl season 3, and the status of Mon-El remains unclear. Could this Brainiac 5 casting be a clue?

Here is what we know at the moment. According to a new report from TVLine, Jesse Rath of Defiance fame is set to appear later this season as Brainiac 5, a half-organic / half-robotic hero with superior intellect and skill. He will be coming to National City later this season as a means to help in the battle against Reign (Odette Annable), who is on the cusp of discovering the full extent of her powers and her destiny. The end of this past episode was the first time this season that the name Reign was actually uttered.

Brainiac 5 has some connections to the Legion of Super-Heroes, and this is what brings us back to Mon-El. There are some connections between him in the comics and this organization, and there have certainly been rumors regarding Chris Wood’s version of Mon-El and the group over the past several months. Eventually Mon-El is going to be returning to the series, but when he does he will be different than the version of Mon-El we’ve come to know over time. He’s someone who has endured far more in the way of a struggle and has experienced things that are hard to fathom.

Ultimately, there’s a good bit to like about getting both Brainiac 5 and eventually Mon-El on Supergirl. What’s so interesting about Brainiac 5 in general is that there are absolutely some evil Brainiac characters out there, as well — Kara Danvers already squared off against one of them earlier in the series with Brainiac 8 a.k.a. Indigo, who was played by Smallville Supergirl Laura Vandervoort. We remain somewhat shocked that this character has not returned in some shape or form — sure, we recognize she was seemingly eliminated, but she seems like someone who could be patched together and repaired again.

More than likely, you’ll be waiting until either after the crossover episode or early next year to meet Brainiac 5 for the first time. There are just a handful of stories left to go this year for Supergirl before it goes into hibernation for the winter. Given that the story is really now just heating up, we’re excited to see what the writers have for us on the other side with Reign fully activated and with Mon-El hopefully back in the picture in some shape or form.

What do you think about this casting?

Not only that, but how do you think that he could be useful in the battle against Reign? Be sure to share your thoughts with us in the comments section below!
