Outlander season 3 episode 8 discussion: Claire and Jenny’s reunion

Outlander season 3 episode 8 sneak peek

When Outlander season 3 episode 8 airs on Starz this weekend, one of the interesting things that you are going to get a chance to see is the long-awaited reunion between Claire and Jenny. Unfortunately, this reunion won’t be as joyous as we may want it to be.

These two were rather close at one point, but since then there’s obviously been a lot of different things that have transpired. What could be a bigger thing to transpire than Claire going away for 20 years and Jenny not having any idea as to what happened? As a result of that it’s no surprise that there are some things that these two have to work out.

For Jenny, she may just think that Claire went away and could’ve just come back at any time. That is what makes it a little bit difficult for her to understand and reconcile just how Claire is feeling. There’s some obvious shade that Jenny throws in her direction (in a new sneak peek that you can see over at Marie Claire), she makes a strange face when discussing one of her grandchildren and whether or not Claire should be around them. It’s rather sad, and it’s a reminder of just what Claire is going to have to endure in the early going to win people over to her side again. She has to convince everyone that she is staying and she doesn’t have any plans of leaving. There is probably a part of her subconscious that wishes that she could just stand up and say the truth about what happened. Unfortunately, that there’s also the reality that even if she did that, there aren’t going to be a whole lot of people who choose to believe her. She already had to endure the whole “witch” controversy and probably wants to run as far away from that as humanly possible.

Here’s the crazy thing about this episode: When you think about everything that could be happening by the end of “First Wife,” Claire getting Jenny back on her side may not be anywhere close to the top in terms of memorable moments. One of the bigger things you are going to see stems from how Claire could react to learning the truth about Jamie’s other wife. We don’t want to spoil anything here (why would we?), but there is going to be a lot of tension that comes out of this moment for two different reasons:

1. The idea of Jamie having another wife in the first place.

2. Jamie choosing to withhold that information for as long as he did.

We understand where this comes from emotionally for him, given that the great love of his life just returned after 20 years and obviously he is going to be scared that if something happens, that he could end up losing her again. That’s probably why he is, (whether it be intentionally or unintentionally) manipulating her on some level to fall for him again before dropping that hammer. He’ll have to realize how wrong that is and have trust that Claire wouldn’t leave him because of his choices.

As for Jenny, we do think that things can be turned around in time — it’s just going to take patience.
