This Is Us season 2 episode 6 removes Kevin Spacey reference before airing

This Is Us season 2 episode 6

When This Is Us season 2 episode 6 airs on NBC Tuesday night, it will be without a reference to actor Kevin Spacey.

In the wake of the accusations made against Spacey by actor Anthony Rapp, who described an incident that occurred while he was still a minor, NBC opted to omit a reference about Spacey from their Halloween episode. According to a report from TVLine, this reference to Spacey was made during a discussion between a younger version of Kevin and a roommate. This Is Us put this script together months ago and there was obviously no way of knowing the storm related to Spacey that would be coming. The only thing NBC could do was be reactive after the fact, and good on them for choosing to do just that. All a Spacey reference would do is distract from the story since all of the attention would be on it. Plus, there would also be questions aplenty as to why NBC didn’t choose to edit the line out after the fact or even figure out a way to record something over it if there was an opportunity to do so.

The ripple effect following Rapp’s comments and Spacey’s attempt at an apology remains vast. House of Cards is officially ending after this coming season, provided that it even gets that far since production on the Netflix series is suspended indefinitely until the powers that be to figure out precisely what it is that they want to do with this situation. Last we heard there are plans to possibly develop a spin-off, but all of this feels very up in the air right now. Rapp’s comments remain fairly fresh and the more this plays out, the more it feels as though this is a franchise that could struggle.

This Is Us doesn’t need the drama of Spacey given that this is a show doing a great job without any of the nonsense or the added headlines. The series is drawing better ratings than any scripted network drama series. Why run the risk of messing that up?

For now, House of Cards season 6 may still premiere in 2018 — we’ll keep you up to date with more news as it come out.
