Supergirl season 3 photo: See Odette Annable’s Reign in costume!
If you look at the picture below (courtesy of The CW), you can get what is the first real look at the evil side to Samantha Arias — she’s decked out in a black super-villain suit coupled with an intricate and somewhat-freaky mask that reminds us of something Hannibal Lecture might make. It’s actually the brilliant design of the mask that makes the costume stand out to us here at CarterMatt.
Do we have questions about the belt? Is it really a belt? Does she need that at all? Hard to say, but this costume does a good job of showing the differences between Reign and Supergirl. It also reminds us of just how dangerous a character Reign really is — not only because of her powers, but also because of who Samantha is as a person. To date, she has been nothing short of a nice woman and mother who cares about other people. However, all of that could be changing/falling apart the moment that she realizes what her destiny is. Reign is not designed to be anything other than a character destined to destroy worlds; she was created with this in mind and the thought of her not being able to do anything else is somewhat devastating.
While it seemed like the show was slow-playing the big Reign reveal for a while, that may be changing to a certain extent based on the way in which this past episode came to a close. It seems as though Kara activating the underwater ship (by accident) accelerated the process — after all, she’s been visited now with a rather bold declaration as to what it is she is becoming. Reign is every bit as powerful as Kara, though we do wonder who on Earth is going to be altogether interested in making a costume for anyone so deadly.
There a few nice homages in here to the original costume in the comics — at least enough to make it feel recognizable. The real strength of Reign as a character though, is going to come via the performance — based on what we’ve seen to date, Annable is nailing it. The fact that she becomes evil is almost as heartbreaking as what she is going to do with the power.
