The Walking Dead season 8: Actor talks surprise return

What happened on The Walking Dead season 8 premiere? Well, for starters, we saw the return of a character who was buried far in the recesses of our mind.

We are speaking here of course about none other than Morales, a character who hasn’t been a part of the AMC series since the very first season of the show. He’s someone we didn’t imagine we would ever see again on the show — yet, here the guy is working alongside Negan and the Saviors.

Juan Gabriel Pareja plays the part of Morales, and we have to imagine that for him it was a pretty surreal experience being back on the show after such a long delay. It has to be exciting to be back, if not a little bit surreal simultaneously since he is coming back to a show that is so fundamentally different. Not only that, but he’s one of the Saviors! He’s fighting for the wrong team and that has to be explored.

The good news is that it seems like it will be. Here is what Pareja had to say on that subject to Entertainment Weekly:

“I can’t say too much, but we’ll definitely learn a little bit of a backstory from Morales and what’s been going on with him over the years, and a little bit of what’s lead to his transformation and transition into one of Negan’s men as a Savior.”

When will this backstory come about? Sooner rather than later is preferred, but the show also has some key decisions to make in terms of how it chooses to present some of this information. We have to imagine that the majority of Walking Dead viewers out there probably are not altogether into the idea of a full-fledged Morales episode. How many casual viewers even remember the guy? Personally, this reveal would’ve been more effective if Morales returned a few seasons ago as it was once rumored, though this is a treat to some longtime viewers who have done rewatches and remember this character from the early days of the show. (Remember, the live viewing audience was also much smaller then than it is now.)
