Poldark season 3 episode 5 (PBS): The wedding sacrifice

There were several moments that we imagine many people out there will discuss from Poldark season 3 episode 5, but the wedding has to be near the top of the list.

Remember here that this is the sort of event that is meant to be wonderful, passionate, and a celebration. However, for Morwenna it was her own personal hell. After Drake found himself subject to George’s cruelty — a consequence of him having power and Ross having none — we saw Morwenna opt to do the unthinkable: Marry the Reverend Osbourne Whitworth, therefore allowing her true love to escape in one piece after being falsely accused of much more than the original crime.

This sacrifice says a tremendous amount about Morwenna in terms of her being a caring, kind human being — she wants the best for those she loves and is willing to put herself on the line in order to ensure that they are okay. In almost any situation this would be considered admirable and it is here; yet, it also comes at a great cost. This moment is a reminder of one of Poldark’s greatest themes: Nothing in this world comes easy. Nothing. It doesn’t matter if you have money or are broker than broke. If you want something you’re going to have to sacrifice for it.

With the character of Morwenna it’s pretty clear that she is a character facing so much more trouble than most. After all, just consider what some of her current surroundings and circumstances are. She has to contend with George who is out for his own self-interest and then also Whitworth, who is arguably even worse than George. Even Elizabeth, her own relative, is not all that kind to her. She wants to marry for love and instead is forced to marry as a way to help someone else. Such is the way for the show’s heroes — as terrible as the villains of Poldark may be some of the heroes are as kind and virtuous as they come.

So cross your fingers and hope that Morwenna is okay — it’s going to be a bumpy ride for her from here on out.
