Daredevil season 3: Who wants more Wilson Fisk? Vincent D’Onofrio returns!

Vincent D'Onofrio

When we first heard the news here at CarterMatt that Vincent D’Onofrio was going to be returning to Daredevil for season 3 we couldn’t be more excited about it. We have never made it a secret here that we think Wilson Fisk is one of the best villains that the Netflix Marvel Universe has ever created and we say that knowing that David Tennant’s Kilgrave has been in this universe (who is also an incredible villain that scared us to death).

Wilson Fisk was a big scary guy with a lot of power (remember that fight scene between him and the Punisher? We felt every punch that was thrown by Fisk), but there’s a lot more to Fisk then just brute strength and that’s what puts him at the top of the list for us. It was his vulnerability, his desperate loneliness and his desire for love that really connected us to that character. A lot of times we will see villains who are mad with power or just pure evil, so running into a character like Wilson Fisk (who has a lot of insecurities that we had a chance to see play out on the show) was something that we’ve never seen before.

The announcement of D’Onofrio’s return to Daredevil season 3 was first made through Deadline, but that’s not the only news coming out of the Marvel Universe today. It is also being reported that there’s going to be a new show-runner joining for season 3 and that show-runner is Erik Oleson (if you recognize his name it’s because he was a co-EP on Arrow). The show-runner switch came about because the two show-runners that were working on Daredevil season 2 (Douglas Petrie and Marco Ramirez) moved over to work on The Defenders.

For us, season 2 of Daredevil was our least favorite out of the 2 seasons. There was just too much going on in season 2 and it actually felt like two short seasons of two different shows. We had the Punisher story and then we had the Elektra story and we wished that they would have just picked a lane since both characters deserved a whole season. We understand why they brought in the Punisher since they are launching The Punisher series on Netflix and we understand why Elektra needed to come in since she is a main story in The Defenders. That being said we wish that they hadn’t squished both of these stories together since season 1 of Daredevil had a much more organic feel for the characters where season 2 felt like a rushed, mishmash with too much going on. Hopefully, Eric is going to be able to bring the show back to its roots, (especially with Wilson Fisk coming back) and give us a more cohesive story.

We just finished with The Defenders this summer and we have a lot of other Marvel properties coming up like the launch of The Punisher, so there is still no launch date for Daredevil season 3. It may be a little bit of a wait, but this is exciting news since we love Wilson Fisk. We can’t wait to see him back on the show and see where his life has moved since the demise of The Hand (a storyline we are seriously over). We would love to see him move deeper into his role as Kingpin and really start running the city while also battling some of his in his own insecurities.
