This Is Us season 2 episode 5 video: What Jack stands to gain in ‘Brothers’

This Is Us season 2 episode 5 will be arriving onto NBC Tuesday night at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time, and at the center of “Brothers” is just that. This will be a story of two brothers in Randall and Kevin who try to define their relationship in both the past and the present.

For the sake of this article, though, let’s focus on the past. The video below via Entertainment Weekly offers up some more insight into how the two feel about each other at the time of a big camping trip headed up by Jack, who desperately wants the two to bond. Jack isn’t necessary the super-tough father figure who thinks that every single excursion “builds character” (we feel now like we’re discussing Calvin’s father in Calvin and Hobbes), but he does hold some of those values and realizes that being outdoors together could do the two men a great deal of good. They can learn a substantial amount about each other by being out in some of these harsh conditions, and with that he is ready for it … except for the bears. Jack, like any other self-respecting human, hates bears.

Do we think that there are going to be some moments of tremendous bonding during this episode? Absolutely, but what intrigues us about the installment actually goes beyond that. We are more just excited to have an episode where the focus is mostly on Jack as a father and it can be less about the whole mystery of his death. We’ve got some more information about it now so it’s not a complete mystery anymore, and we hope that this is something that This Is Us does continue to shed a little bit more light on over time. We just don’t want it to be every episode, given that this is not a show about a mystery. This is a show about family, about people getting to know each other more through some of the various trials and tribulations of life. This episode, at least based on this preview, seems to be very keen on providing that. We’ll see what happens in the present and are excited to write about it here at CarterMatt on Tuesday night.

Beyond this scene, there are many concerns that The Big Three are facing in the present. Randall is still learning how to be a foster parent, Kate is now expecting a child with Toby, and Kevin is trying to keep a very calculated façade while very much struggling behind the scenes with a prescription pill addiction that seems to be spiraling out of control.
