NCIS: Los Angeles season 9 episode 4 video: Sam’s boat & moral support

Sam's boat

Leading into NCIS: Los Angeles season 9 episode 4 airing on CBS this weekend one of the things you’ll see is Sam’s boat as a central plot point.

When you think about it, it makes some sense. After all, just look at things from this vantage point — Sam is looking for some sort of cause to ease his soul. That’s what this boat to us really does represent — while we think the endgame of finding a proper resting place for Michelle’s ashes will be a powerful moment for him and his children, this boat gets him from point A to point B. He will focus his energy on this and hopefully, will heal as he works on getting through some of his emotions here. By the time he makes it to the point where he says a proper farewell with her ashes in the wind, he will be ready. He can take his memories and his strength as he presses onward.

The sneak peek below from Sunday’s “Plain Sight” offers the slightest bit of insight regarding where the character’s head is at the moment. You see Sam wrestling with figuring out what to do next with his boat while Callen is there to offer up coffee and a little bit of moral support. In all honesty, it’s not what Sam was actually looking for — he probably wanted some sort of physical help with the boat and instead, all he is getting is some snarky commentary from his partner. Is it entertaining? Sure, but it also doesn’t get Sam anywhere.

The largest takeaway that we have from watching this sneak peek is mostly just that Sam is driven to get this job done and that Callen, even if he doesn’t really help, is willing to be buy his side during much of it. There is a sweetness here that, in one form or another, is actually rather endearing. This preview is a nice reminder as to why Sam and Callen make one of TV’s best partnerships — they are about each other and the bromance is strong. They don’t bicker as much as Steve and Danny from Hawaii Five-0 but the relationship is still very much there.

For those wondering if there will be a case mixed in with some of Sam’s side project, of course there is! This is NCIS: Los Angeles, after all, and murders seem to constantly come in like clockwork. At the end of the preview the two guys are called in to work on one of their latest cases and judging from some of the promotional material that is out there at the moment they will be working in an undercover capacity alongside Shay Mosley (Nia Long), who will be out in the field more so than she has been since first appearing on the show.
