Tony Goldwin talks Scandal season 7 episode 3, Olivia, and Vermont

Tony Goldwyn

Scandal season 7 episode 3 is airing on ABC Thursday night, and for Tony Goldwyn this is a huge episode of the show. Fitzgerald Grant has spent the better part of the season under the radar, and that makes sense given that he’s no longer President, and to an effect he hasn’t really been around in Washington. We’ve envisioned him more off within his real-life fantasy land of Vermont. This is where he envisioned himself going for the vast majority of his time in office, but there was one key part of said fantasy that is now missing: Olivia Pope. She was meant to be there, and instead she’s evolved into Chief of Staff for his ex-wife and current President Mellie Grant. She has acquired more power than ever before, but in true Scandal fashion accruing such power also comes with a tremendous loss.

How are things going to work for these characters on Thursday night? That remains to be seen in the aftermath of Fitz turning back up. The one thing that we can offer for you now is what Goldwyn had to say on the subject of both his character and his future in the aftermath of building that place for Olivia and him to live a new interview with TVLine:

“The whole reason he built this house was to live with Olivia and build a family … For Fitz, ‘Vermont’ always included Olivia. That was the fantasy. But since he and Olivia have been estranged and things have gotten complicated, I don’t think he’s gone to the house very much. It would be too painful. So it’s quite a shock when he finally walks into that place and there are all the ghosts of what he imagined his future would be.”

This should give you a good sense of where Fitz is in this episode coming up — lost. He doesn’t have a clear path beyond the Presidential library, and the one person he wanted to share a future with isn’t around for it. He needs to find his own way in the world and that is going to prove to not be even remotely easy. It’s going to take him time to figure out what he wants, provided that he wants anything other than Olivia. If that is all he wants now he better go ahead and just get used to a future of suffering. There is going to a lot coming up for him in that department.

For Olivia, it also seems as though her own suffering is far from over provided that she continues to play with fire with both Command and defying Mellie in the White House. While we can see a situation here at CarterMatt where she realizes the error of her ways, becoming someone horribly similar to her father, but also one where she ends up killed. This isn’t necessarily a story with a happy ending.

What do you think of Tony Goldwyn’s view of things?
